Shallow River (
American Wigeon )
American wigeons are good-sized ducks, smaller than mallards, but much larger
than teal. They are sometimes called baldpates due to the white pate on the head
of the male.
This scene of a shallow river shows a typical muddy sandbar left by the
receding water. High water washes logs, debris, silting mud and sand from
surrounding land and carries it downstream with its swift current. As the water
recedes and slows down, it drops the log, forming an eddy behind it. The sand
and mud settle to the bottom in this eddy, forming abstract patterns form the
twisting current. Finally, the water lowers leaving the log and mud bare,
exposed to the air. This action is not unlike the patterns left in the
snowdrifts after a blizzard or high winds.
The shallow river is constantly changing the sandbars and small islands as
high water and fast current sweep these obstructions to new locations.
It is always fascinating to watch nature mold new designs with awesome force
and then return to tranquility.
